WINFIELD, Kan.- On Friday evening, the Cavaliers (8-3) took on Langston University (0-7) and Southwestern College (Kan.)(2-5) and won both matches.
St. Gregory's faced Langston in the first match and swept the Lions in three sets (25-21, 25-19, 25-19). The Cavs were led by Gabby Ware (JR/San Antonio, Texas) on offense, as she recorded a team-high, 9 kills, and she also added three aces. Khyra Echols (FR/Plano, Texas) had an efficient 8 kills, and hit for a .389 attack percentage. BreAnna Smoak (JR/Iowa Park, Texas) recorded 7 kills, followed by Krystal Lopez (JR/El Paso, Texas)'s 6. Sarah Ahrens (JR/Wichita Falls, Texas) led the Cavs with 14 assists, and Sunny Clark (JR/Dublin, Texas) followed just behind her with 12 assists. Kayley Davis (SO/Irving, Texas) held down the back row, by recording a team-high 17 digs in the match.
Only 20 minutes after taking down Langston, the Cavaliers faced the Moundbuilders. SGU struggled slightly in the first set, falling 20-25, but rebounded in the second set by winning 25-13. Southwestern then came back and won set three 25-20 once again, but the Cavs didn't let up and went on to win the final two sets (25-18, 15-11). Gabby Ware led all players in the match with 15 kills, and she also added 15 digs on defense. Ware also served up three of the Cavs 16 aces in the match. Krystal Lopez played solid, by adding 13 kills and 11 digs. Courtney Murphy (SR/Tulsa, Okla.) recorded 11 kills, and BreAnna Smoak followed her with 10 kills. Murphy also added a game-high 6 aces. Sunny Clark led the Cavaliers with 23 assists, 14 digs, and four aces. Sarah Ahrens recorded 21 assists and 10 digs on defense. Kayley Davis once again recorded a game-high 29 digs, and she also added two aces.
The Cavs will put their four game win streak on the line against (RV) Oklahoma City University on Thursday Sept. 7, at home at 7 PM.
