FORT WORTH- Thursday night, the Cavaliers (9-13, 5-10 SAC) played at No. 11 Texas Wesleyan (20-6, 10-5 SAC) and the Rams came away with the 86-76 victory.
The first half of this game was very back and forth, and close throughout the first 20 minutes. Rodney Smith (SR/Chicago, Ill.) got hot early for the Cavs by knocking down a couple three pointers, and the Rams answered with a few of their own three's.
TWU led by 5 with 10 minutes to go in the first half, but SGU tied the game up, and then took the lead for the first time in the game. From that point on though, the two teams would go back and forth, until the buzzer sounded to end the half. At halftime the score was 37-37.
The Rams knocked down 5 three's in the first half, and shot for 55.6 percent from deep. However, the Rams only shot 35.5 percent from the field, and the Cavaliers shot 53.6 percent from the field in the first half.
The Rams were led by Ryan Harris' 10 points in the first half, and Dion Rogers and Naiel Smith each scored 7.
The beginning of the second half looked very similar to the first half, as the teams exchanged the lead back and forth, but with about seven minutes to go in the game, the Rams took the lead for good. The Cavaliers struggled with their shooting in the second half, and that gave TWU the opportunity to extend their lead late in the game, and close out the victory.
Rodney Smith led the Cavaliers in scoring with 24 points, and he also had 5 assists and 5 rebounds. Kilder Gonzalez (JR/Maracaibo, Venezuela) scored 17 points, and set a new career high with 11 rebounds. This was Gonzalez's second double-double of the season. Jordan Rutherford scored 16 points and recorded 5 rebounds. Malik Barnett (JR/Midwest City, Okla.) scored 10 points and had 4 rebounds.
The Rams were led by Dion Rogers' 21 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assits. Najeal Young scored 20 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Ryan Harris scored 18 points, and Naiel Smith finished with 10 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists.
