ALEXANDRIA- The No. 4 Cavaliers split their two games on Saturday in Alexandria, La. at the Purple and Gold Tournament, on the campus of LSU-Alexandria. In game one, the Cavaliers lost to No. 10 William Carey University (Miss.) 3-0, and then the Cavs were victorious against No. 22 LSU-Alexandria, 8-6.
Hannah Moak pitched a 7 inning shut out for the No. 10 Crusaders (4-0). Bryn Houlton (JR/Savanna, Okla.) pitched a solid 6 innings for the Cavaliers (2-2), only allowing three runs.
Sammy Leisinger (SR/Little Axe, Okla.) went 2 for 3 with a double, and Sutv Meely (SR/Tecumseh, Okla.), Lauren Miller (JR/Blanchard, Okla.), and Janely Cruz (SO/Grand Prairie, Texas) each reached base on singles.
In game two, the Cavs got ahead early against the Generals. SGU scored in the top of the first on a RBI single from Lauren Miller, to drive home Meely. LSU-Alexandria would tie the game at one, on a leadoff homer by Kimber Gruehl. The Cavs' offense would explode for 6 runs in the top of the fifth inning, to give SGU the 7-1 lead. Mychelle Mortenson (JR/Mesa, Ariz.) scored the first run of the inning off of an error, which allowed Janely Cruz to reach base. Cruz then scored on a single hit by Sutv Meely. Sammy Leisinger then knocked a double to right-center, which drove home Meely and Bryanne Knox (SR/Dickson, Okla.). The next batter was Lauren Miller, who'd double down the leftfield line to score Leisinger. Dani Nissen (JR/Oklahoma City, Okla.) then drove in Miller on a single to left. SGU would add on one more run in the top of the sixth inning on a wild pitch, which scored Baylee Hughes (FR/Brighton, Ill.). With the score 8-1, going into the bottom of the seventh, the Generals gave the Cavs a scare, by scoring 5 runs. However, the Cavs would hang on for the 8-6 win.
Chula Chavez (JR/Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) got the win for the Cavaliers and Bryn Houlton came in to earn the save. Chavez pitched 6 1/3 innings, and Houlton pitched the final 2/3 of an inning. Lauren Miller led the Cavs offensive attack, by going 2 for 4 with a double and 2 RBI's. Sammy Leisinger went 1 for 3 with a double and 2 RBI's. Sutv Meely went 2 for 4 with an RBI. Jessica Nelson (JR/Lewisville, Texas), Dani Nissen, Morgan Lathan (FR/Purcell, OK), and Bryanne Knox each had one hit for SGU.
No. 4 St. Gregory's will be back in action on Feb. 17, when they take on Bethany College at 5 and 7 PM.
