SHAWNEE- On Saturday afternoon, the Cavaliers (3-3) took on the University of the Southwest (2-5), and the two teams split for the second day in a row.
In game one, the Mustangs won by a final score of 6-3. St. Gregory's would strike first in the bottom of the first inning, when Layton Moore (SO/Jones, Okla.) scored after a bases loaded walk to Adrian Soltero (SR/Oklahoma City, Okla.). University of the Southwest would answer right back in the top of the second inning with three runs. Payton Chacon hit a two run homer, and then Kody Kolb knocked in Ean Smith with a single. The Cavaliers would score two runs in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game at three. Jordan Martin (SR/Moore, Okla.) led off the inning by getting walked and then he was driven home on a double by Connor McCoy (FR). With Ryan Lujan-Leonard (FR) on third base, Adrian Soltero would ground out to the second base, scoring Lujan-Leonard. In the top of the fifth inning, Kenneth Corona would score on a single from Brock Sullivan. The Mustangs got some extra run support, when Payton Chacon hit another two-run homer, giving the University of the Southwest the 6-3 lead.
Mychal Yarbor (JR/Bandon, Ore.) was credited with the loss for the Cavs. Yarbor pitched all 7 innings, giving up 5 earned runs, 8 hits, and he struck out 5. Kevin Whitaker picked up the win for the Mustangs. He pitched the first four innings, allowing three earned runs, on one hit, walked 5, and struck out 3.
In game two, the Cavs would win 13-10, in a shootout. The University of the Southwest and St. Gregory's each scored a run in the first inning. The Cavs first run came home on Ryan Lujan-Leonards single to center, that knocked in Layton Moore. In the top of the second inning, the Mustangs drove four runs across the dish, followed by the Cavaliers scoring three in the bottom half of the inning. Adrian Soltero forced a leadoff walk, and he was driven home on Armando Fajardo (JR/San Mateo, Calif.)'s homer on the very next pitch. Layton Moore would then knock in Brady Kokojan (JR/Drummond, Okla.) on a single by Layton Moore. The University of the Southwest added two more runs in the top of the third to make the score, 7-4. However the Cavs would answer with three runs in the bottom of the third, to tie the game at 7. Connor Parsells (SR/Oklahoma City, Okla.) started the scoring by knocking in Soltero and Fajardo with a double to right field. Then Tyler Hebert (JR/Huffman, Texas) would score on a wild pitch. The Cavs would grab their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning by scoring four runs. Soltero would score the first run of the inning, on a double by Fajardo. Michael Garcia (SO/Houston, Texas) then hit a double to drive in Fajardo, which brought up Layton Moore, who'd hit Kokojan and Hebert home on a single to center. The Mustangs bounced right back though and scored three in the top of the fifth, to make the game 11-10. To seal the deal, the Cavs would score two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, by Hebert scoring on a wild pitch, and Layton Moore scoring on a passed ball.
The winning pitcher for SGU was Grant Schamburg (JR/Weatherford, Okla.), who came in during the top of the third inning, and Brady Kokojan recorded his first save of the year by closing out the sevent inning.
Three Cavalier batters recorded three hits in the game. Armando Fajardo went 3 for 4 with two doubles, a home run, and 3 RBI's. Michael Garcia went 3 for 3 with a double, one walk, and one RBI. Connor Parsells went 3 for 4 with a double, a stolen base and 2 RBI's. Layton Moore went 2 for 4 with 3 RBI's, Ryan Lujan-Leonard went 2 for 5 with an RBI, and Brady Kokojan went 1 for 3 with 2 runs scored.
St. Gregory's will be back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 14, when they take on Randall University at Bill Nicklas field at 1 and 4 PM.
