SHAWNEE- On Friday afternoon, St. Gregory's (2-2) took on the University of the Southwest (1-4) in a double-header, and the teams split. The Cavaliers won game one 8-2, and the Mustangs won game two 7-1.
In game one the Cavs' got off to a hot start, and never let the Mustangs into the game. The Cavs got their scoring started early by driving across three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Connor Parsells (SR/Oklahoma City, Okla.) led off with a walk and stole second base, and then Jordan Martin (SR/Moore, Okla.) reached on an infield single, which moved Parsells to third base. A passed ball allowed Parsells to score, and moved Martin to second base. Adrian Solerto knocked Martin in by hitting a double to left field. Soltero would score on a ground ball hit by Joseph Melchor (SO/Redondo Beach, Calif.). No runs would score for either team until, University of the Southwest scored one run in the top of the fifth, but the Cavs would answer with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Tyler Hebert (JR/Huffman, Texas) led off the inning with a double to center field, and Easton would re-enter the game to run for Hebert. Bennett scored on a single by Armando Fajardo (JR/San Mateo, Calif.) to make the game 4-1. The Cavaliers scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, making the score 8-1. Joseph Melchor hit a double to center, and then Marcus Rethwill (JR/Portland, Ore.) hit a single to left, which the leftfielder mis-played allowing the two runs to score. Easton Bennett (SR/Portland, Ore.) then singled, followed by a double to right field by Armando Fajardo. Brady Kokojan (JR/Drummond, Okla.) singled to right, scoring Bennett and Fajardo. Kyle Naylor (FR/Sapulpa, Okla.) came into pitch for the Cavaliers in the top of the seventh inning, and gave up one run before recording the final three outs.
Matt Oxner (JR/San Jose, Calif.) was the starting pitcher for the Cavaliers and picked up the win. He threw six strong innings, allowing only 3 hits and only one run, while striking out 11 batters. Jordan Martin and Armando Fajardo had two hits a piece, and Brady Kokojan, Adrian Soltero (SR/Oklahoma City, Okla.), Joseph Melchor, Marcus Rethwill, Easton Bennett, and Tyler Hebert had one hit a piece.
In game two of the double-header the Cavs lost 7-1. The Mustangs came out with hot bats in the top of the first inning and scored 5 runs on five hits. Neither team would score again until the Mustangs added one more run in the top of the fourth and seventh innings. The Cavaliers finally broke the shutout, by scoring in the bottom of the seventh inning, on a RBI single by Jordan Martin, which scored Connor Parsells.
The winning pitcher was Marvin Galarza, pitched 7 innings for the University of the Southwest, allowing just one run, on 7 hits, and he struck out 7 batters. Tyler Hebert picked up the loss for the Cavs.
St. Gregory's and University of the Southwest play two more times tomorrow at Bill Nicklas Field, starting at noon.
