SHAWNEE- Texas Wesleyan University (14-7, 6-4 SAC) came into Saturday's game as one of the top rebounding and assisting teams in the nation, but the Cavs played a very tough and energetic game to stay close with the Rams. The Rams average a plus 7.75 rebound margin (No. 16 in nation) against opponents, and they 16.85 assists per game (No. 10 in nation). The Cavs tenatious defense in the first half, forced 11 turnovers, and the Rams only shot 35.5 percent from the field. St. Gregory's (2-15, 0-10 SAC) led 14-10 at the end of the first quarter, and led by as many as 7 points. TWU fought back in the second quarter, by starting off with a 7-0 run. SGU regained the lead and were up by 5 with only 2:20 to go in the half, but the Rams knocked down a couple late 3's to take a 28-26 lead into halftime.
At halftime, the Cavs were shooting 45.5 percent as a team, and had 8 assists as a team. Kylee Tatum (SR/Bethel, Okla.) led the team with 8 points in the half, and Shanques Garrett (SR/Tulsa, Okla.) had 6 points.
To start the third quarter, TWU went on a 8-0 run, followed by a 5-0 run by the Cavs. After the Cavs got back within 5 points, Texas Wesleyan pulled away. The Cavs had 19 turnovers after 3 quarters, and TWU led 51-39 going into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Cavs would start on an 8-2 run and only trailed by 6 points with 3 minutes to play in the game. Shanques Garrett would knock down two free-throws to make it just a 5 point deficit with a minute to go, but it was too little to late, as Texas Wesleyan would end up with the 55-51 victory.
The Cavaliers ended up out-rebounding the No. 9 rebounding team in the nation, 39-36, but TWU stole the ball from the Cavs offensive players 17 times, and forced 27 turnovers in total.
The Rams were led offensively by Bailey Broadnax's 19 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals. Katelynn Threats scored 12 points and had 7 rebounds, and Lorian Benjamin scored 9 with 3 steals. Ashlie Bruner didn't score much for TWU, but she finished with 3 points, collected 7 rebounds, dished 3 assists, and stole the ball from the Cavs 5 times.
St. Gregory's will be back in action on Thurs. Feb. 2, when they travel to the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma to play at 6 PM.
