SHAWNEE – St. Gregory's advanced to the semifinals of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament with a 2-1 win over Oklahoma City Friday afternoon at Fr. Victor Roberts Field. The Cavaliers, who hadn't beaten the Stars in 13 years entering this season, notched their second win over OCU in the last 16 days.
SGU (10-7) will face regular-season SAC champion John Brown (Ark.) Monday in Siloam Springs. The Golden Eagles were 7-0 winners over Wayland Baptist (Texas) Friday.
The Cavs, playing in their first postseason game in more than 10 years, got off to a fast start. Abi Housecroft converted a penalty kick just six minutes in after she was fouled in the box. It was the senior's team-leading 13th score of the season.
SGU went up 2-0 in the 27th minute when Angelica Daggs found Araceli Flores, who slipped one past the keeper from 12 yards out. OCU's Sara Ricks responded with an unassisted goal 10 minutes later to make it a one-score game at intermission.
The Stars would outshoot the Cavs, 7-2, in the second half, sending a pair of shots off the post. But the SGU didn't allow the equalizer as time wound down.
"I thought the girls did a great job of getting out there and setting the tone," said SGU coach Tommy Riley. "They pushed us there in the second half, but we responded. The girls showed a lot of heart and determination in holding them off."
Cavalier keeper Jena Flewelling went the distance in goal, turning away four OCU shots. Flores' three attempts were tops on the team. Ricks led OCU with five shots.
