JOPLIN, Mo. – St. Gregory's cross country teams posted a pair of top 12 finishes Saturday at the MSSU Southern Stampede. Billed as one of the nation's largest meets, the event hosted approximately 2,500 high school and collegiate runners.

Highlighting the morning's action was freshman Christian Arbuthnot. The Goodwell native placed fourth out of 152 runners with a time of 26:26. Arbuthnot, who was 10 seconds out of the runner-up spot, helped the men's team to an eighth-place finish in the college/JUCO division.

Robert Torres also had a strong race, coming in 18th with a time of 27:10. Jose DeOchoa broke into the top 50 with a time of 28:20, and Blake Crouch was 56th after finishing in 28:24. Rounding out the times for the men's team were Luis Lopez (30:16, 106th) and Matt Leedy (30:21, 108th).

A trio of freshmen paced the women's team, which finished 12th in the college/JUCO division with a 21:11 average. Cathy DelReal came in 41st (20:39) with Alexas Vargas not far behind at 43rd (20:43). Kathleen Joyce posted a time of 21:06 – good for 62nd out of the 148 runners competing.

Alexis Gee finished in 21:23 (74th), and Sophia Weisbruch completed the 5K course in 22:04 (97th). Rounding out the times for the Cavs were Teagan Dreyer (22:46, 109th), Adrianna Garza (23:44, 122nd) and Zyanne Baxter (27:11, 142nd).

St. Gregory's travels to Fayetteville, Ark., for the Chile Pepper Festival October 1.
