HUTCHINSON, Kan. – St. Gregory's cross country teams got their seasons off to solid starts Friday night at the Terry Masterson Twilight Classic. The unique event, which began at 9 p.m., was hosted under the lights of the Fun Valley Sports Complex.

The Cavalier women finished sixth overall with a combined time of 1:44:48. SGU was led by senior Alexis Gee. She came in 18th out of 101 runners with a time of 20:05. Not far behind her was freshman Cathy DelReal, whose time of 20:27 was good for 22nd. Posting top 50 finishes were Alexas Vargas (21:05, 42nd) and Kathleen Joyce (21:15, 46th), while Sophia Weisbruch was 62nd with a time of 21:52.

Rounding out the women's finishers were Zyanne Baxter (22:42, 78th), Teagan Dreyer (23:17, 85th), and Adrianna Garza (23:47, 91st).

The SGU men placed seventh overall with a combined time of 1:52:58 – just 3:13 back of No. 5-ranked and third-place St. Mary (Kan.). Robert Torres, a national qualifier a season ago, led all Cavalier runners with a time of 21:28 – 11th out of 117 athletes.

Freshman Christian Arbuthnot was 13 seconds back of Torres in 13th place. Blake Couch broke the top 40 with a time of 22:40, and Jose DeOchoa came in at 23:02 – good for 52nd overall.

Finishing closely together were Matt Leedy (24:04, 73rd), Luis Lopez (24:17, 78th), and Kris Parker (24:19, 79th).

St. Gregory's returns to action September 17 at the MSSU Stampede in Joplin, Mo.
