SHAWNEE – Sterling's Erica Briseno netted a late goal Friday to help the Lady Warriors spoil St. Gregory's home opener with a 3-2 victory at Fr. Victor Roberts Field. Sterling improved to 4-0 all-time against the Cavaliers, who dropped to 1-1 with the loss.
With the game tied at 2-2 and less than five minutes on the clock, Elena Lemus played in a pass from the left side that Briseno converted into the right side of the net – just past the outreached arms of SGU keeper Jena Flewelling.
The Lady Warriors kept the Cavs off the board down the stretch, ending what turned into a back-and-forth affair.
SGU got the scoring started in the 27th minute when senior Beth McHale hit a shot over Sterling keeper Madeline Sutton from 35 yards out. It was the second goal in as many games for McHale, who entered the season without a career score.
Sterling answered 13 minutes later as Miranda Coleman found Briseno sprinting down the middle of the field for a score. The Lady Warriors took the lead 10 minutes into the second half with a goal on Gabrielle Baca's free kick. The Cavs' Araceli Flores found the equalizer in the 67th minute, though, with a bullet under the crossbar.
But Briseno silenced the home crowd with her second goal of the game as time wound down.
The teams took turns controlling the possession, ending with 13 shots each. Flewelling finished with a pair of saves in her 90 minutes of work.
St. Gregory's returns to action next Friday at home again Wiley (Texas). Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Fr. Victor Roberts Field.
